Yaksu Sundae-guk
14 Dongho-ro 7-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul
Since 1977
Yaksu Sundae-guk opened in 1977. Yaksu-dong was originally called Sindang 3-dong, so its story is part of Sindang’s history too. The streets around Yaksu Market grew into a sundae-guk (Korean sausage soup) alley, where North Korean refugees who settled here after the war and local workers came for cheap, filling meals. The broth is clear and light rather than thick, closer to a North Korean-style soup. After singer Sung Si-kyung featured it on his food show, the lines grew long. The restaurant has since moved into a new building, and some longtime regulars say the old space’s atmosphere didn’t make the move.
