Mabokrim Halmeoni-jip is where Sindang-dong tteokbokki began. Ma Bok-rim opened her shop on February 19, 1953. Her secret sauce, gochujang mixed with chunjang (black bean paste), made her famous, and a whole tteokbokki town grew up around her shop. She started out selling tteokbokki, corn and potatoes in front of the old Dong-a Theater. By the 1980s the alley was at its peak, and many shops had a DJ booth that played songs and read out customers’ stories. She became nationally known through a 1996 gochujang commercial with the line “not even my daughter-in-law knows.” Since her death, her daughters-in-law and granddaughter have run the shop. In 2024, Seoul named it an Oraegage, the city’s title for long-lasting local shops.
