Pyeongyang Myeonok

207 Jangchungdan-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul

Since 1985

Pyeongyang Myeonok traces its roots to Daedong Myeonok, a noodle house in Pyongyang run by Kim Myeon-seop. In 1985, his daughter-in-law Byeon Jeong-suk opened this restaurant in Jangchung-dong. It became the head of a family of Pyongyang-style naengmyeon restaurants that later spread to Nonhyeon-dong and Bundang. Now run by the third generation, it still grinds its own buckwheat to make the noodles. Like the jokbal shops nearby, it reflects the refugees who settled here after the war. That history is why so many North Korean dishes are still served in Jangchung-dong today.
