Ttungttungi Halmeoni-jip

174-1 Jangchungdan-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul

Early 1960s

Ttungttungi Halmeoni-jip (“Chubby Grandma’s House”) is one of the first-generation shops on the jokbal alley. Its founder, Jeon Suk-yeol, was from Gwaksan in North Pyongan Province. She came to Seoul with her mother in 1943, and her mother went back north in 1948 and was never heard from again. During the Korean War, Jeon fled to Busan and earned her first money selling clothes. She used those savings to open a North Korean restaurant in Jangchung-dong, where refugees had moved into houses left empty by the Japanese. From its earliest days, the shop has boiled its jokbal in an aged soy-sauce broth. Jeon passed away in 2021 at age 93. Exactly which shop opened first on the alley is still debated.
